  6. 1. Introduction
  7.  
  8. These release notes show you how to install the Viper VLB drivers into a
  9. system running Windows NT Version 3.1 Final Release. You must have this 
  10. version of Windows NT for the Viper VLB drivers to work properly.

  12. The disk should contain the files as listed in figure 1.

  30. This release consists of Windows NT 8-bit, 16-bit and
  31. 32-bit drivers. The supported resolutions and memory required for each
  32. resolution is shown in figure 2.

  62. 2. Installing the Windows NT Drivers
  63.  
  64. This section shows you how to install the Windows NT drivers on your system.
  65. The drivers are capable of the video modes listed in figure 2.
  66.  
  67. The following procedure assumes that the Viper VLB board is already installed
  68. in your system. If it is not, install it now.
  69.  
  70. Similarly, make sure that Windows NT Version 3.1 Final Release is installed
  71. on your hard disk. The drivers in this release are written to run only with
  72. Version 3.1 Final Release, and not with any other version of this operating
  73. system.
  74.  
  75. Finally, make sure that Windows NT is set to use standard VGA resolution
  76. (640x480). In other words, make sure that you can bring up Windows NT using 
  77. the Viper VLB board.
  78.  
  79. If the preceding conditions are correct, proceed with driver installation in
  80. the next section.

  83. 2.1. Preparing for Installation/Update
  84.  
  85. Refer to Windows NT documentation to determine what shut-down or log-off
  86. procedures, if any, should be performed before beginning this installation.

  89. 2.2. Initial Driver Installation
  90.  
  91. Windows NT should be running in standard VGA mode as you begin this
  92. installation.
  93.  
  94. 1.  Insert the Viper VLB Windows NT 3.1 driver disk into your floppy drive.
  95.  
  96. 2.  In the window labeled MAIN, run Windows NT Setup by double-clicking
  97. on that icon.
  98.  
  99. 3.  In the SETUP window, click on Options.
  100.  
  101. 4.  Click on Change System Settings....
  102.  
  103. 5.  Click on the Display scroll button and use the scroll button to choose
  104. Other (Requires a disk from hardware manufacturer).
  105.  
  106. 6.  In the displayed dialog box, click on OK if the diskette is in drive A:,
  107. or enter the drive you are using and then click OK.
  108.  
  109. 7.   Double-click on the resolution, color depth, and refresh rate combination
  110. you wish to use.
  111.  
  112.         Note that you must have enough memory to support the color depth or
  113. resolution you select, or you may have a corrupted or absent display. Note
  114. that your monitor must support the refresh rate you choose, or the monitor
  115. will not synchronize. Refer to figure 1 for a list of supported resolutions,
  116. color depths, and refresh rates.
  117.  
  118. 8.   After waiting for the Close option to appear, click on Close to close
  119. the window.
  120.  
  121. 9.   Click on Continue. Windows NT displays a window showing that files are
  122. being loaded.
  123.  
  124. 10.   In the dialog box labeled Additional Information, double-click
  125. on a monitor type. Select a monitor that best matches your monitor timing.
  126. For example, if your monitor supports VESA monitor timing, you may choose
  127. Generic.  Then choose memory size 1 Meg  for 1 MB of memory or 2 Meg for 2 MB of memory.
  128. 3 Meg and 4 Meg are reserved for use in future releases and are not supported
  129. in this release.

  131.         For the Viper, the Memory Base default address is 80000000.
  132. You may choose a different memory base to match your board address from
  133. the choices displayed.  The available options are:
  134.                 A0000000
  135.                 20000000
  136.                 80000000 (default)
  137.  
  138.         Font Size default is Small. This release does not support the large
  139. font size. If you choose Large, you will get small font size.
  140.  
  141.         Click on OK to close the dialog box.
  142.  
  143. 11.   Close the Windows NT Setup window. The following message is displayed:
  144.  
  145.         The changes you have made will not take effect until the computer is
  146. restarted.
  147.  
  148.         Click on OK.
  149.  
  150. 12.   Remove the Viper VLB Windows NT 3.1 driver disk from the floppy drive.
  151.  
  152. 13.   To restart the system, choose the File pull-down menu from the
  153. menu bar in the Program Manager window. Choose Shutdown from the pull-down
  154. menu.
  155.  
  156. 14.   Click on Restart.
  157.  
  158. 15.   Click on OK.

  161. 2.3. Changing from one Viper VLB Driver Resolution to Another
  162.  
  163. The procedure used to change from one Viper VLB resolution to another is
  164. nearly identical to the initial driver installation shown in section 2.2.
  165.  
  166. 1.  In the window labeled MAIN, run Windows NT Setup by double-clicking
  167. on that icon.
  168.  
  169. 2.  In the SETUP window, select the Options pull-down menu from the menu
  170. bar.
  171.  
  172. 3.  In the Change System Setting dialog box, select a new resolution, then
  173. close the window.
  174.  
  175. 4.  A dialog box is displayed that asks if you wish to use the current drivers
  176. or new drivers. Click on Current.
  177.  
  178.         (Note that if you choose New, you are asked to insert a diskette. New
  179. can be used to install an updated version of a previously installed driver.)

  181. 5.  Continue with steps 10 through 14 of the initial driver installation in
  182. section 2.2.

  186. 2.4. Updating the Viper VLB Windows NT 3.1 drivers
  187.  
  188. The procedure used to update the Viper VLB Windows NT 3.1 drivers is nearly 
  189. identical to the initial driver installation shown in section 2.2.
  190.  
  191. 1.  In the window labeled MAIN, run Windows NT Setup by double-clicking
  192. on that icon.
  193.  
  194. 2.  In the SETUP window, select the Options pull-down menu from the menu
  195. bar.
  196.  
  197. 3.  In the Change System Setting dialog box, select the resolution you want
  198. to change, then close the window.
  199.  
  200. 4.  A dialog box is displayed that asks if you wish to use the current drivers
  201. or new drivers. Click on New. You are asked to insert a diskette. Insert the 
  202. disk with the updated driver into the floppy drive, then click OK.

  204. 5.  Continue with steps 10 through 14 of the initial driver installation in
  205. section 2.2.

  208. 3. Known Bugs, Notes, and Limitations
  209.  
  210.  
  211. 3.1. General Notes
  212.  
  213.  
  214. 1.  The 16- and 32-bit-per-pixel drivers are not accelerated;
  215. they use a dumb frame buffer. The 8-bit drivers are accelerated.
  216.  
  217. 2.  If your board does not have enough memory to support the resolution you
  218. have selected, the display will be incorrect.
  219.  
  220. 3.  If you have changed the resolution to one that your monitor cannot support,
  221. Windows NT provides a way to restart with the last known good resolution. To
  222. return to the last known good resolution at any time:
  223.  
  224. a.  Press the Reset button on your system chassis or turn off the system and
  225. turn it on again.
  226.  
  227. The system displays the normal sequence of boot-up messages. It then
  228. prompts you to select the operating system to start. Select Windows NT Version
  229. 3.1, or simply wait and Windows NT will be selected by default. (Be ready for
  230. the next step with your finger over the space bar.)
  231.  
  232. b.  After all boot-up messages have been displayed, the system briefly
  233. displays:
  234.  
  235.         OS Loader V3.1
  236.         Press spacebar NOW to invoke the Last Known Good menu
  237.  
  238. You need to press the space bar as this screen is first displayed. This screen
  239. comes and goes so quickly, you should keep your finger over the space bar after
  240. the operating system selection in the previous step.
  241.  
  242. c.  A text screen is displayed labeled Configuration Recovery Menu. Follow
  243. the directions on the screen. You should choose the Last Known Good option.
  244.  
  245.  
  246. 3.2. Anomalies
  247.  
  248. The following is a list of anomalies you may see when running Windows NT. 
  249. These problems are related to running Windows applications under Windows NT; 
  250. they are not related to any third party graphics hardware or software.
  251.  
  252. 1.  In 32-bit-per-pixel mode, Paintbrush tools are displayed
  253. in monochrome.
  254.  
  255. 2.  In 32- and 16-bit-per-pixel modes, the start-up
  256. logo screens of Lotus 1-2-3 and Freelance are displayed in monochrome.
  257.  
  258. 3.  In 32-bit-per-pixel modes, the Minesweeper game is displayed
  259. in monochrome.
  260.  
  261. 4.  In 32-bit-per-pixel modes, Microsoft Excel toolbar buttons
  262. do not display as 3-dimensional buttons as they should.
  263.  
  264. 5.  In 16- and 32-bit-per-pixel modes, Microsoft Works
  265. toolbar buttons do not display as 3-dimensional buttons as they should.
  266.  
  267. 6.  In 16- and 32-bit-per-pixel modes, the Microsoft
  268. Hardware Compatibility Test (HCT) font tests return "FAIL".
  269.  
  270. 7.  When running Word Perfect 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions, stray pixels
  271. are left on the screen after closing a file.

  274. 3.3. Known Bugs
  275.  
  276. 1.  A number of display problems have been found associated with
  277. Micronics motherboards. For example, there is some "noise" or flicker on the 
  278. screen, especially when the cursor is moved with the mouse.
  279.  
  280. 2.  In 16-bit-per-pixel mode, the Paintbrush color eraser does not work 
  281. properly.  
  282.  
  283. 3.  In 32-bit-per-pixel mode, running Paintbrush will generate an exception 
  284. fault. This issue is being addressed.
  285.  
  286. 4.  When running "Introducing Windows NT", or any other full screen
  287. DOS application, no picture will appear.  This issue is being addressed.
